Grove Fort

This renovated stone farmhouse is situated on a working cattle and sheep farm between the villages of Dromara and Dromore in County Down in the Dromara Hills just a mile from the Slieve Croob Scenic Loop and the area of the proposed Mournes National Park.

The accommodation is comprised of sitting room with wood burning stove, television and adjoining fully equipped kitchen, second lounge with open fire, a shower and toilet on the ground floor and three bedrooms and a bath/shower room upstairs.

The house has limited disability access, oil fired central heating throughout and firewood is provided at no extra cost. On site parking and children’s toys games and videos are available on request. A welcome pack containing tea coffee milk and homemade scones is provided. The owners Ivan and Annette Rankin live next door and are on hand to deal with queries and give directions etc. as necessary. For this reason check in and leaving times can be quite flexible. Newcastle (where the mountains of Mourne sweep down to the sea) and Dundrum Nature Reserve are 12 miles away. Tullymore, Castlewellan and Drumkeeragh Forest Parks are a short drive away, as is Legananny Dolmen, Finnis Souterraine, Slieve Croob, Bronte Homeland Drive, St. Patrick's Trail, Downpatrick and Dundrum and Hillsborough Castles. A1 to Dublin/Belfast is six miles away at Dromore; Belfast International and City Airports are approximately 20 miles away and ports of Belfast and Larne can be reached in approximately one hour. Golf can be enjoyed at Spa Golf Club, Ballynahinch, Banbridge Golf Club or Edenmore Country Club, Magheralin. Small grocery shopping is available at Harry's in Kinallen two miles away, larger supermarkets are available in Dromara, Dromore and Banbridge or Lisburn. Eating out options include the Pheasant at Annahilt, Angler's Rest Katesbridge, Cafe Rossi Ballynahinch, Parson's Nose, Hillsborough, Halfway House, Banbridge and various restaurants in Newcastle area.

Getting to the start by car

Directions from Town: From Belfast: Take M1 towards The West / South and continue to junction 8, then exit toward Newry/A101/A1 At the roundabout, take the 1st exit onto Hillsborough Rd/A1 heading to Dublin/Newry/Lisburn/A101 At the next roundabout, take the 2nd exit and stay on Hillsborough Rd/A1 heading to Dublin/Hillsborough. Continue to follow A1, Go through 1 roundabout, then take the exit signed for Dromara. Turn left toward Dromore Rd/B177. Quick turn left at McKees Bridge Rd and then quick right onto Dromara Road. Follow the Dromara Road for 3.7miles and then turn right at Magheraconluce Rd (follow signs for Kinallen). Continue onto Howe Rd and then onto Kinallen Rd. At Kinallen go across the staggered cross roads onto Katesbridge Rd. Follow the road for 1.3 miles and then turn left at Grove Rd. Destination will be on the left. From Dublin: Take M1 towards Newry and continue onto N1 and then A1. Continue on A1 to just past Banbridge and Turn right at Waringsford Rd (signs for Dromara). Continue onto Knockgorm Rd/B25 for 2.9km, then turn left at Gall Bog Rd, with slight right at Tullinisky Rd. Come to Junction and turn right at Enagh Rd. Continue on Enagh Road for 3.3 km until T-junction. Take right onto Grove Road, destination will be on the left.
