Slievemoyle Cottage (Blackthorn Cottage)
The largest and most spacious of the Slievemoyle Cottages, Blackthorn Cottage will sleep six people very comfortably. It has one double bedroom with en suite shower room and one family suite (a double bedroom with en suite bathroom and pine staircase leading to a loft with two single beds). Bed linen and bath towels are supplied. Oil central heating and use of electricity are included in the rate.
The open plan kitchen/dining/sitting area in Blackthorn features a lovely stone faced fireplace with a wood burning stove, set and ready to light on your arrival, with your first basket of logs supplied. Relax on the comfortable sofas, have meals at the sturdy kitchen table while admiring the view. If the weather is fine, head outside through the double doors to the paved and fenced patio, perch on the picnic bench and enjoy the spectacular, panoramic views across County Down countryside to the Irish sea and the Isle of Man.
Behind the cottage is an area of lawn for picnics and play. Through the gate is the trail to the top of Castle Mahon mountain. The views from there are well worth the climb. Follow the maps in the cottage or ask us for the best routes around the hill farm. Remember to pack your walking boots.
500 metres off the A25 means peace yet proximity. Places to visit in the immediate area include Castle Ward National Trust property, Clear Sky Activity Centre (aka Winterfell from Game of Thrones), Strangford village with its pubs and restaurants and Kilclief and Ballyhornan beaches. Follow the Mourne Coastal Route through Ardglass, Killough and beyond to Newcastle and the Mourne Mountains. Go by car ferry to Portaferry and the Ards Penninsula, call at the little villages around Strangford Lough- a 50 mile loop- and head back to historic Downpatrick, then home to Slievemoyle.
Belfast City is only a 50 minute drive away. The coastal route to the North Coast and the Giant's Causeway, or a trip to Derry, Armagh or Dublin are do-able in a day.
In 2015 Slievemoyle Cottages were awarded a Silver Award in the Green Tourism Business Scheme.
