The Imperial

We're proud of the history of The Imperial - which first began trading in the 19th century. We completed an extensive and detailed restoration in 2021, completely refurbishing the premises while paying attention to the building's remarkable history and retaining many of the traditional features that give The Imperial its unique style. We love the fact that this beautiful building has been such an important feature in this area, and we know you'll enjoy it too.

If you're looking for a warm welcome, time to relax, a selection of great food, and a truly comfortable stay, you're assured to find it at The Imperial.

You’ll find us on the Main Street in Garvagh - a wee rural town nestling at the foot of the Sperrin mountains in the Lower Bann Valley. We’re on the A29 - only a few miles from Royal Portrush Golf Club, Bushmills Distillery and the stunning Causeway Coast. If you love fishing, the chances are that you’ll know this area well, for the beautiful Agivey River teems with salmon and trout and is a haven for sportsmen and women.

Garvagh itself has a rich and varied history. Through the years, this rural town has achieved widespread fame for its sportsmen, politicians, authors, musicians, poets and characters - including George Canning and the talented Hampsey Harpers. Each September, Garvagh welcomes autumn with a Horse Show - organised by the Garvagh Clydesdale and Vintage Vehicle Club. If your appetite is whetted by this dip into the past, you can also visit Garvagh Museum and Heritage Centre which is located behind the clock tower at the top of the town. This museum is a joy to discover, for it is home to an extensive collection of historical and cultural treasures and is the largest, private rural folk museum in Ireland.

If you're in the mood for a little relaxing time outdoors, you can explore Garvagh Forest which is a short walk from The Imperial. Covering over 200 hectares, this beautiful forest offers a range of walking, cycling and mountain bike trails and has an actual pyramid (built by George Canning) at the entrance to the forest! Lovely walks are always in season here beside the picturesque Agivey River - especially in spring when ancient bluebells and wild garlic blossom.

While it remains a traditional shopping town serving Glenullin, Ballerin and Moneydig, Garvagh has - more recently - become a hub of light industry. It also serves Aghadowey - a beautiful rural townland that is the largest rural district in Ireland.
