The Guildhall
Sitting within reach of our famous 400-year-old Walls is one of the City’s most recognisable - and arguably one of the most stunning - landmarks, the Guildhall. It has been in the heart of city life since 1887 and the auburn brick building is the anchor for the buzzing Guildhall Square. The Guildhall’s most arresting feature is its collection of stunning stained-glass windows. Donated by London Companies, they represent everything from fishmongers to musicians. Recognise the Guildhall Clock? It was modelled on London’s Big Ben. Fashioned in a neo-gothic style, the Guildhall is one of the most striking buildings in the North West and was originally built in 1887 by The Honourable The Irish Society. The red sandstone building is of neo-gothic architecture, with Tudor overtones. The building’s staircase, main hall organ and corridors give a fascinating insight into this distinctive building’s history. As well as being home to the impressive stained-glass windows, you’ll also be able to learn all about the Plantation of Ulster. The Guildhall features a new interactive tourist information point with interpretation panels throughout the building bringing to life its many special features. The dedicated exhibition explores how the Plantation has shaped the City’s history. Today the Guildhall is a must-see tourism attraction and is the backdrop to some of the City’s key events, including the City’s award-winning Derry Halloween celebrations, City of Derry Jazz Festival, and Spring Carnival celebrations. In 2019 Luke Jerram’s ‘Museum of the Moon’ artwork was installed in the Guildhall during Derry Halloween. The prominent building is also home to the City’s Council’s chamber and Mayor’s parlour; it is used as a conference venue and holds weddings, receptions and civil ceremonies. It has won a number of awards from a variety of professional bodies including learned professional societies, heritage groups and construction organisations.
